Mild tremors were felt in parts of the coastal regions in Andhra Pradesh on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 24, following an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale in the Bay of Bengal. The tremors reportedly were felt in Visakhapatnam, Nellore and Prakasam along the coast, as well as in Tirupati, according to several people on social media. The earthquake was felt in Chennai too, as several people reported the tremors on social media. They said that they felt the tremors in Thiruvanmiyur, Alwarpet and areas close to the sea in Chennai. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the 5.1-magnitude earthquake had a depth of 10 km and occurred in the Bay of Bengal, 296 km to the south-south east of Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh. This was also confirmed by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad. “We are still in the process of studying the tremors. The epicentre of the earthquake is found to be near Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh, in the Bay of Bengal region. Its magnitude is ascertained as 5.1 on the Richter Scale. As a result, tremors were felt in parts of northern Tamil Nadu including Chennai,” an official in the IMD, Chennai, told TNM. Tamil Nadu Weatherman Pradeep John said that an intra plate quake was felt near Chengam in Tiruvannamalai district on April 11. This was the first quake with an intensity of 3.0 to be felt in three years.
