Kerala IAS officer Sriram drunk driving case: 2-member panel to probe allegations

The IAS officer had been placed under suspension after the car allegedly driven by him killed journalist KM Basheer.
A two member committee will probe the allegations against IAS officer Sriram Venkitaraman who is under suspension after the car allegedly driven by him hit and killed a Thiruvananthapuram based journalist KM Basheer. The committee is headed by IAS officer Sanajy Garg, Princiapl Secretary of Backward Communities Developement. Dr B Asok Secretary, Power is the Presentig officer of the committee, reports Mathrubhumi. Basheer was a journalist with Malayalam daily Siraj. The committee will collect evidence from Siraj director A Saifudheen Haji on Tuesday, December 17. Basheer was killed in an incident in which the IAS officer's car rammed into Basheer's bike in the early hours of August 2 under the Museum police station limit in Thiruvananthapuram city. The government placed Sri Ram Venkitaraman under suspension on August 5. He was booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 279 (Rash driving or riding on a publi way) and 304 (Culpable homicide not amounting to murder). He had taken a year off from work and had been studying for his Master’s degree in Public Health at Harvard University. The incident happened a week after his return to the state and the government posted him as the director of the Land and Survey Department. The police has been accused of delaying the blood sample examination of Sriram who was in a drunken state at the time of the accident. They are also accused of allowing Sriram to leave the General Hospital by himself even when he was under police custody. Though Sriram was asked to go to the government medical college, he went to a private hospital in the city. Sriram's friend Wafa was also in the car at the time of the accident.
