BJP MP Pragya Thakur issued a clarification over her Godse remark on Friday and said that she was sorry if she had hurt anybody's sentiments for repeating her views in parliament that Nathuram Godse, the assassin of MK Gandhi, was a patriot. However, she said that her comments, made during a speech by DMK MP A Raja, were twisted and presented ‘out of context’. Addressing the Speaker in Lok Sabha on Friday, Pragya Thakur said, “I apologise if my statement has hurt anybody's sentiments. But I also want to say that my statements inside the Lok Sabha were twisted and misrepresented. This is condemnable. The context of my statement was something else. I respect the work done by MK Gandhi for this nation.” During a debate on the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill, 2019 introduced by the Ministry of Home Affairs, DMK MP A Raja was asking the government to reconsider its stance. He said that resentment harboured over ideological differences persists over time and threats arising from them need to be objectively assessed, not politically coloured. Just as he began to cite the example of MK Gandhi’s assassination by Hindu nationalist Nathuram Godse, Pragya interrupted him, shouting, “You cannot give the example of 'deshbhakts' (patriots)!” However, Pragya did not regret her statement lauding the killer. The BJP, which had earlier elevated the Malegaon blast accused to the parliamentary consultative committee of the Ministry of Defence, removed her from the parliamentary panel on Thursday. In response to the developments, Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi had tweeted, “Terrorist Pragya calls terrorist Godse, a patriot. A sad day, in the history of India’s Parliament.” Terrorist Pragya calls terrorist Godse, a patriot. A sad day, in the history of India’s Parliament. — Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) November 28, 2019 Referring to this, Pragya said on Friday that she had faced physical and mental torture ‘despite being a woman.’ “I would like to inform the house that I was called a terrorist in society by one member of this very house. Despite all the conspiracies against me, none of the charges against me have been proved in the court. To call me a terrorist without any proof is against the law and an attempt to insult my dignity as a woman, a saint and an MP,” she said.
