TNM contributor Sarvana Raja wins 2019 SCARF award for mental health reporting

The story, "My tryst with bipolar disorder: How I fought through several bouts of mania to embrace it," was published in December 2018.
The News Minute's Saravana Raja won the SCARF Media Award for Mental Health 2019 on Sunday for his article, "My tryst with bipolar disorder: How I fought through several bouts of mania to embrace it." The story explores the author's personal experience of facing psychotic episodes, mania and depression and how he managed to overcome the stigma surrounding mental health.  The other winners include Sweta for the Huffington Post and Hamsini Ravi for The Swaddle, besides Nidhi Adlakha for The Hindu. Two awards were also handed out to writers from regional languages; Usha Narayan from Kungumam Doctor and K Swetha from Kungumam Thozhi. Read TNM's story below.  My tryst with bipolar disorder: How I fought through several bouts of mania to embrace it Jury members Dr Jaya Shreedhar and Venkatesh were happy to note the increase in the number of articles in regional languages and the diverse areas in mental health that were dealt with, in the submissions. The awards were handed out by Justice Dr Anitha Sumant of the Madras High Court, who told the gathering that while policies and legislation was necessary, what really mattered was work at the grassroot level which involves sensitisation of society at large. Dr Thara, Vice Chairperson of SCARF announced a new online digital course on mental health reporting for journalists, students of media and communication studies which the organisation has developed in association with NGO Sangath. The 4-week digital course consists of lecture videos and study material, and Successful completion of the course will make one eligible for applying for a part time 12-month long paid fellowship on mental health reporting. SCARF, an acronym for Schizophrenia Research Foundation, was founded in 1984 by a group of philanthropists and mental health experts. Along with the Press Institute of India, SCARF created the award for Mental Health Reporting in 2012 to "encourage more journalists to write on mental health-related issued in an attempt to reduce the stigma in the society."
