Nabeesa, an Indian Union Muslim League activist, was detained on Monday for committing the offence.
It is confirmed that bogus voting took place at a polling station in Kerala’s Manjeswaram Assembly constituency, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Teeka Ram Meena said at a press conference on Tuesday. A woman was taken into custody on Monday after the presiding officer at the polling station raised a complaint of bogus voting against her. The woman -- Nabeesa -- was not a voter in the constituency, according to poll officials. After the presiding officer at Bakrabayal polling station was suspicious of Nabeesa, he immediately registered a complaint and the police took her into custody. Nabeesa, an Indian Union Muslim League activist, was arrested by the Manjeswaram police for having committed the offence in polling booth number 43, reports The Hindu. She has been booked under Sections 171 (d) and 171 (f) of the Indian Penal Code. At Manjeswaram, a tough battle is on between the Indian Union Muslim League of the Congress-led UDF and the BJP. In 2016, the IUML candidate scraped through by a margin of 89 votes against the BJP. Its candidate Abdul Razack passed away last year and hence the bye-poll was necessitated. Bye-elections happened in five assembly constituencies of the state including Manjeswaram on Monday. The other assemblies are Aroor, Konni, Vattiyoorkavu and Ernakulam. The Election Commission has put the total poll percentage at 69.93. A total of 6,69,596 voters cast their votes from 896 polling booths. The Manjeswaram constituency also reported the highest number of machine failures, according to the The Hindu report. As many as 24 VVPAT machines malfunctioned in Manjeswaram. Teeka Ram Meena turned down demands for re-polling in several booths in the Ernakulam constituency. The demands came since many people were unable to cast their votes owing to heavy rains and waterlogging in Ernakulam on Monday. He said the decision was taken on the basis of the returning officer’s report. Also read: One year, 4 women burnt to death: Kerala's spurt in stalking-turned-murder cases
